If you’ve never heard of pineberries before then you are probably scratching your head trying to work out exactly what they are.

Are Pineberries Natural?

If you don’t know much about them, that’s because they are a fairly new berry and they are still quite mysterious to the general public.

Just from the name alone, pineberries sound a bit suspect, and they definitely don’t sound or look natural, but is this truly the case?

If you want to know more about pineberries, as well as if they are natural, then you have come to the right place (for more information about pineberries, read here)! We are going to be talking about what these eye-catching berries are and if they are natural. So let’s get to it!

What Are Pineberries?

So before we talk about if pineberries are natural or not, what exactly are they? Well, simply put, their name is a cross between “pineapple” and “strawberries”.

They are pale pink/pale orange or white in color and they even have strawberry seeds covering them. They look quite a bit like pale strawberries and they are also called by their German name “ananaserdbeere” quite commonly.

The question of the pineberries’ legitimacy has been debated for quite some time, with many people truly believing that they aren’t even real in the first place, but we can assure you that they definitely are!

The most well-known cultivator of these mysterious berries is Hans de Jongh, who is a well-known strawberry breeder.

Pineberries are very similar to regular strawberries, but they are a lot paler and it’s easy to tell the difference between them because of the coloring. They are just as sweet and juicy as strawberries, but they have more of a tropical flavor.

They are also grown in the same season as strawberries and they are much easier to get a hold of than you might think.

Are Pineberries Natural?

So now you have a better understanding of what pineberries are, you’re probably wondering if they are natural. They definitely don’t sound or look natural, but the answer to this question might surprise you!

They are naturally grown and completely free of GMOs, so the short answer to this question is yes, they are completely natural! Pineberries came to be by crossbreeding strawberries.

The specific strawberries used to make them in the first place were the South American strawberry Fragaria chiloensis, which is found in Chile, and the North American strawberry Fragaria virginiana.

The pineapple part of their name comes from the tropical flavor that they have. It can be described as “pineapple”-flavored, but with the same consistency, texture, and appearance as a strawberry. It is a type of strawberry first and foremost though.

Though they were crossbred and cultivated rather than coming to be by themselves, they are by all technicality natural, so you don’t have to worry about them being fake or lab-grown.

Pineberries are actually considered to be rather healthy as well, so you can enjoy these fascinating berries completely guilt-free!

Are Pineberries Healthy?

Are Pineberries Natural?

As we have already mentioned, pineberries are considered to be quite healthy. The nutrients found in pineberries are incredibly similar to regular strawberries.

Pineberries are filled with a great source of fiber, antioxidants, and many other essential nutrients. They are also great for things like weight loss, gut health, skin health, immune system health, and much more.

You can eat pineberries completely guilt-free and in most cases, they are going to benefit you and your health greatly!

Can You Grow Your Own Pineberries?

If you are curious about how to grow pineberries now you have a better understanding of them, then you will be happy to know that growing them isn’t too difficult, especially if you already have some experience in growing regular strawberries already.

There is only really one difference between growing strawberries and pineberries, and as long as you understand that difference, you should have no issues in growing them for yourself.

To successfully grow your own pineberries, you need to make sure you have at least one regular strawberry plant in close proximity. This is because strawberries help to pollinate the pineberries, and this will give the plants a better chance of fruiting.

It is important to have some understanding of how to grow strawberries beforehand, as this will make it much easier.

You can find multiple guides on how to grow both strawberries and pineberries, so even if this is your first time doing it, it’s worth trying out!

A book I have personally used is Homegrown Berries which covers all things berries from planting to picking.

Where Can You Find Pineberries?

Unfortunately, finding pineberries can be quite a challenge. They do exist and they are out there, but they are not as common as other berries. This is because they are a hybrid fruit and they are still very new to the market.

Over time, they will become more readily available, but for now, you will just have to keep an eye out for them and see if you can find them. The best places to look for them are grocery stores, health food stores and markets, and farmer’s markets.

They are only available during the spring through to the fall, so this is the best time to check these locations for them.

There are some places online like Amazon (White Strawberry Seeds – 200+ Seeds) that will sell pineberries as well, so if you can’t find any in your area, don’t worry, there are other options.

Once pineberries have been cultivated for a bit longer and they are more well-known and understood, they will start to become more readily available to the general public.

Final Thoughts

Pineberries are a mysterious and fun fruit that is still working its way into the market, but they are becoming more and more popular by the day!

These berries are incredibly unique and they have all the best qualities of both pineapples and strawberries.

Though they are still quite obscure and hard to get a hold of, as they gain more popularity, you will be able to try them for yourself.

They are definitely considered to be natural in the grand scheme of things, and they are considered to be pretty healthy too!
